Some people say you don t need to lube an o ring chain but they re missing the point.

It works well for both chains because these are made with similar polymers and have similar lubrication needs. For o ring chains the blue label chain lube without needing that to a degree as required before we could make it a little thinner coat make it much more adhesive and yet still be able to. Of course the lube eventually dissipates and requires added lubrication but generally offers a longer lasting coating preventing premature wear as you power through mud sand and water which helps explain why the off road crowd prefers the o ring chain. Most modern motorcycle chains are sealed with o rings or x rings some other fancy rubbery ring to keep grease inside the pins. An o ring chain is a whole lot less needy. The o ring is sealed and helps keep the pins lubed but the plates also need regular lubing or they ll oxidise stick and wear faster. You either have an x z or o ring chain type and it s important to use that information when making a decision. O ring chains also stretch less and last far longer than the standard chain. There isn t a chain on the market that doesn t require a small amount of maintenance from time to time.

Note that like lots of manufacturers motorex offers road and off road formulas. These kinds of heavy duty chains are more expensive than open chains but last much longer and stretch. While these chains require less upkeep and tend to not need to be replaced as often they do require some care. This chain has little o rings between the link plates and rollers of the chain that are used to keep grease and lube inside of your chain while keeping dirt out.
